Our Hand-woven Cord Seating range showcases the renowned 'Charpai', a beloved piece of vernacular furniture in India and other regions of South Asia. The Charpai, meaning 'four legs’ (char + paya) in Hindi, is a versatile rectangular cord seat commonly found in rural Indian homes due to its simple and cost-effective design.
This comfortable day bed goes by different names, such as khat, khatla, and khatiya, and each region has its own unique design, weaving patterns, and cords to enhance its charm. Charpais are perfect for sitting, lounging, and sleeping, and can accommodate multiple people at once. Despite evolving in design, materials, and weaving patterns over the years, the use of Charpais has remained primarily limited to rural areas and is on the decline.
At Svatva, we aim to modernize this timeless piece of furniture by incorporating beautifully hand-carved and meticulously hand-painted patola motifs on the frame and a double-weaving seat to prevent sagging and provide firm yet comfortable seating. Our collection of Charpais includes a variety of sizes and shapes, such as the traditional Charpai, a contemporary flat-front Charpai with carvings on pillar-style legs that can be used from both sides, a day bed size Khat, a sleek bench-style Khatali, and small Khatali stools.
Each Charpai is a unique work of art crafted by various artisans who have carved the legs, assembled the frame, painted the carvings, and woven the seating. Our Charpais are a testament to our traditional roots and the creative prowess of all the craftsmen involved in making them, as well as the handicraft artisans of the Salvi community who weave the stunning Patola fabrics.
General Care Instructions for Cord Seating:
Please keep the product away from direct sunlight and moisture. The product is best suited for indoor use only. To clean it, use a soft cloth or a soft duster, and vacuum it regularly to keep it clean. Keep the product from ramming into solid surfaces to avoid damaging the fragile hand-carved parts. Also, avoid dragging the product to move its position.

‘Kuñjara Pōpaṭa’ Khat
Our multi-functional ‘Kuñjara Pōpaṭa’ Khat is a perfect addition to your home for sitting, lounging or sleeping through any time of the day! The frame of the product is made using solid teak wood, with each corner bearing an elegantly hand-carved and hand-painted patola motif.
