Nandini Rawal

Nandini Rawal, the founder and director of Svatva, is a passionate individual who established this venture to make “Handcrafted Conversation Pieces” and revive and promote the tangible and intangible aspects of India's rich cultural heritage. She holds a Master's in South Asian Studies from Columbia University, where she extensively studied various aspects of Indian culture, such as History, Arts, Literature, Religion, and Built Heritage.

With this expertise, she  collaborated with several heritage ventures and organizations as a researcher, writer and cultural mapper while working her way towards creating Svatva.

Nandini's passion for traditional crafts, culture, and research has led her to establish Svatva, where she endeavours to preserve India's unique cultural crafts and art traditions. She singlehandedly researches, interviews and documents handicraft traditions by interacting with and empowering different artisan communities. She also designs and produces all the products, which are handcrafted by her team of skilled artisans with the utmost dedication and precision.

Svatva is based on a multi-pronged approach that can reach different people and communities, including art collectors, heritage enthusiasts, home decorators, lay-people and artisans.

Through Svatva, she aims to empower skilled artisans whose skills are being replaced by automation in the modern world and promote and preserve arts and crafts that form an indispensable part of India's cultural fabric and rich heritage. She conceptualized the idea of making handcrafted conversation pieces to create aesthetic, yet functional furniture pieces that double up as artworks and become a medium to tell stories of different traditional crafts and arts. She aims to make Svatva an interactive, enriching experience which can help keep India's rich cultural legacy and diverse craft traditions alive.

Through her work, she also seeks to create a cultural consciousness that makes people value their cultural roots and identities, bringing much-needed compassion and understanding moving forward as a society.
